Let’s Go Swimming
August 15, 2011 on 8:12 pm | In Avery, Haley, Hayden and Laura, Trey | No CommentsWell, as some of you know, we got a pool last summer. Mind you it wasn’t in our back yard, but in the back yard of a house that we’ve been trying to flip. This is our first attempt at flipping a house. Let me tell you, it has been more of a flop. When we bought it last August, we got an absolute steal on it. It’s a good thing too. Because we’re right at breaking even.
We’ve got friends that have said, “Even if you made a dollar, it is worth it. You’ve learned so much.” They’re right. We have learned a lot about flipping houses, house repair and pools. We’ve learned all about taxes and insurance. We’ve also learned that we won’t be doing this again any time soon.
The ONLY silver lining to this cloud (outside of not completely losing our shirts on the deal), is that the house has a pool. And it is in our neighborhood. So we’ve at least gotten to make some use of it. It’s been great watching the kids turn more and more into fish-like creatures. Haley’s still a little nervous around water, but as you can see from the pictures, Trey’s all in.
Trey had been jumping off the side without too much fear. I was in the pool and said, “Hey Trey – why don’t you go jump off the diving board to me.” Much to my surprise, he bee-lined it to the diving board, ran down it and flung himself off. I told Laura to grab the camera and asked him to do it again. Sure enough, we got the shot below.
We also managed to take sweet Avery for her first swim ever. She sported her little MSU Bulldog one piece. (she’s a little young for a two piece).
Now we’ve actually got a contract on this house. Lord willing, we’ll have it sold on August 30th. We’ll definitely miss having the pool that close, but sure as heck won’t miss the acid reflux holding on to this house has caused.
Poor Trey
July 15, 2011 on 7:40 am | In Avery, Haley, Hayden and Laura, Trey | 1 CommentI’ve got a feeling Trey is coming up on the short end of the stick when it comes to pictures. When we had Trey, we were fairly confident that we’d have another baby sometime down the road. I’m thinking that subconsciously, we didn’t feel the need to take as many pictures to “remember” him as a baby. In part because we thought there would be another. In part because he looked exactly like Haley as an infant anyway.
Avery looks like she’s going to be back in the spotlight like Haley, though. Maybe it is the thought that this might actually be our last. Who knows. Regardless – here’s round two of Avery pictures. I’m sure more will be coming soon.
Haley and Trey are getting along great with Avery. Haley could (and has) literally hold her for 4 hours straight on the couch. Trey wants to hold her constantly. Like a typical boy, he tends to lose interest after 30 seconds or so.
Laura’s doing well. She’s definitely achieved rock star status.
She’s Here!
July 12, 2011 on 7:24 pm | In Avery, Haley, Hayden and Laura, Trey | 1 CommentShe’s here! Actually, she’s been here for a week!
Avery entered the world on July 5th at 11:55 AM. She weighed in at 8 lbs 6 oz. Not tiny by any stretch, but the smallest we’ve had yet. We had a couple of minor complications during labor, but we had a fantastic doctor (we love Dr. Homsi!), a wonderful nursing staff and great friends that were praying us through it.
Laura was awesome as always. Not only did she do a fantastic job, she looked good while doing it. Didn’t even take off her jewelry.
Avery looks a lot like Haley and Trey did as newborns. I know all newborns look similar. A lot like old wrinkly men. But these three look eerily similar. When Haley was born, I was snapping pictures like crazy. When Trey came along, I was less trigger happy with the camera. As I was going through deleting the “bad” shots, I came across one that reminded me of one I took of Haley. After digging it up, I realized why it looked so similar. Not only did the kids look alike, but Laura’s nails were painted the same too.
So when Avery came, of course, we had to get the same shot. I know…definitely not a glamorous pose, but crazy how much they look alike.
Haley and Trey absolutely LOVE Avery. We talked about Avery a lot leading up to her birth. Laura made the mistake of telling Haley on Monday morning that the next time she went to sleep and woke up, Avery would be here. Of course, Laura didn’t take Haley’s nap into account and the first thing Haley asked after her nap on Monday was to see Avery. We had to explain that she needed to go to sleep one more time. ![]()
As we did with Trey, we let the kids come in and meet her alone in the hospital with no other visitors. Haley was bouncing off the walls with excitement. Trey made a bee-line right for Avery chanting “Hold her, hold her, hold her”.
We’ll get more pictures posted soon. For now, these will have to do. I want to give a special thanks to my parents who kept Haley and Trey for the week while waiting on us hand and foot. We couldn’t have done it without them. Also to Julie for taking a turn at sitting with Haley and Trey so that my parents could be with us for while in the hospital.
Random Photos
May 30, 2011 on 4:57 pm | In Haley, Hayden and Laura, Trey | No CommentsIt was brought to my attention recently that my fantastic wife was harboring a plethora of photos on her camera. So of course, I had to go through them all to tag them, rate them and add them to our photo collection. Below is a sample of the thousand or so pictures I got to pick through.

Happy Birthday, Trey!
May 23, 2011 on 8:56 pm | In Hayden and Laura, Trey | No CommentsT-boing (as Haley calls him) is two years old! He had his second birthday this past Saturday. As usual, Laura did the decorations and made some awesome cupcakes. It had a Buzz Lightyear theme. Trey LOVES Toy Story and actually calls every character “Buzz”. So he was in heaven.
My parents and Laura/Ryan/Seth came up. Laura’s parents came over along with Kathleen, Brian and Bill’s little brother DeMarcus. We had a great time. Which is actually a bit surprising since naps were very scarce this weekend. Haley and Trey always have a blast with Seth around so I’m sure that helped the attitudes a bit.
I tried out a new recipe. Well, not exactly a recipe, since a recipe would imply that I actually had instructions. Actually, I just concocted a pork extravaganza. It was pork loin that had been butterflied and stuffed with pork sausage. Wrapped in…of course…bacon. It turned out fantastic. Definitely something we’ll try again.
After the party, everyone left and our kids got naps. Once they woke up, we let them play outside with some of the new toys Trey got. The toy that they ended up liking the most was a Buzz Lightyear water toy. It’s actually pretty cool. There’s a base that connects to the hose and squirts water up. It has a handle like a throttle that allows you to control how much water shoots up. Then there’s a rocket ship that goes in the stream of water that lifts off when you move the handle. If you’re gentle with it, the rocket will just hover 10 feet off the ground in the stream of water. Of course, our kids weren’t so gentle with it. A video of them playing in it is below. You should have a look. It is well worth a minute and a half of your life. Of course I’m biased.
Easter Turkeys
May 13, 2011 on 10:05 pm | In Haley, Hayden and Laura, Trey | No CommentsIt’s Friday the 13th. Not really the luckiest day. I’m getting ready to go turkey hunting tomorrow morning with a friend from work. Luckily, he’s taking me to his place, since our place is covered up in water. That water has caused me major trouble when it comes to being able to hunt turkeys there! From the reports I’ve heard, the house on the land in Millington is okay, but the land all around it is a lake. Now, if we can just get the rain to hold off (or at least just drizzle) tomorrow morning, we’ll have us a hail mary on the last day of the season.
The kiddos seem to be changing like crazy. Trey, more so than Haley. They’re loving these longer days and are spending plenty of time outdoors. Laura’s planning on trying to potty train Trey in a few weeks when Haley gets out of school for Summer. We’re thinking he’s on track and ready because he points out to us when he goes potty in his diaper. We’ll see.
Easter’s come and gone. Not sure what our tradition is going to be for hiding baskets, but this year didn’t work out so well. We were in St. Louis for Easter and we managed to give 3 spankings between waking up and getting Easter Baskets. (which incidentally was just 10 minutes). So much for good behavior…
Trey tickled us opening his candy. He was SO serious with it.
Outside of that, it is life as usual. Busy. Crazy busy. And only going to get busier. Laura’s due on July 5th so baby number 4 (Avery) is right around the corner. Laura’s in full bore nesting mode which means I typically come home to a pretty clean house, a fabulous dinner and an exhausted wife. The clean house is good. Especially since I found out I’m highly allergic to dust. SOOO, allergy shots will be starting up soon.
Cheese Balls and Bike Rides
March 21, 2011 on 7:09 am | In Haley, Trey | No CommentsOne of our favorite movies these days is Alvin and the Chipmunks- The Squeakuel. Even Trey knows many lines from the movie and the kids go insane when certain performance parts begin on the movie. The Chipmunks favorite food is Cheese Balls! A couple months ago Haley asked me what they were like, so of course I bought some at Kroger that week…on sale, of course! The only container of Cheese Balls I saw was the size of my son, but I bought them anyway. Now, they are more than a Chipmunk favorite, they are a munchkin favorite at our house. Trey goes for the pantry to get Cheese Balls multiple times a day. This is our second container…and it lasts for quite some time. This is now our biggest source of conflict- when I say NO to the Cheese Balls- heaven forbid!
Saturday we took advantage of the beautiful weather and went to the park for some bike riding lessons. Trey’s legs are a tad too short for his tricycle (which is a pink and purple hand me down, poor guy) but Haley jumped right on and started riding her new bike with training wheels- thanks, Aunt Julie and Andy! She loves it because it is pink and purple, her favorite colors. She won’t ride without her helmet and we had to talk her out of trying to wear the knee and elbow pads…she says, safety first! Once she started going on her own, Hayden and I just looked at each other and he said, “now that’s how you teach a kid to ride a bike!” I’m sure it will be quite a different story when the training wheels come off. Now, Trey is obsessed with bikes and wants to ride one like Haley. He’ll learn soon enough and then he’ll be off. He is all boy and loved playing with the football and finding all the sticks at the park. It didn’t take long for Haley to get distracted picking the wild flowers. Hayden couldn’t get enough of her focus and attention to all the beautiful flowers she picked for her bouquet. She wouldn’t take her helmet off for anything, except to let Trey wear it for a while. She is such a good sister (and he is a very patient brother)! Once she got it buckled on him, she said, TA-DA!
Birthday Girl
March 1, 2011 on 11:05 pm | In Haley, Hayden and Laura, Trey | No CommentsToy Story is reality at our house! Haley chose to have a Jessie party to celebrate her 4th birthday with her friends and family. We went to Shelby Farms and had the Round Up near the stables. All of the girls were given Jessie shirts to get into the Cowgirl spirit. The girls (and parents) all had a ball feeding the horses at the stables and having a nice picnic in the sun. We were blessed with a window of great weather. I was so happy that the adults got into the theme and were all wearing cowboy hats, bandanas, and/or sheriff badges. Haley felt very special all day and can’t wait till Sunday when she is OFFICIALLY four. She asks me every day how many more days, then says, "that’s not too long to wait!" I could not be more proud of the little lady that graces our house. She is truly a princess and loves to dress up to prove it. Tomorrow is "community helper" day at her preschool and she is supposed to dress up- she kept trying to talk me into letting her dress up like a princess because they help out.
Trey had a blast at the party and loved singing Happy Birthday to his sister and being one of the girls at the picnic. He dressed up like Woody and loves Toy Story too. His favorite character is Buzz, but he was saying, "WOODY!" all day. So cute. He is fearless, energetic, and a ball of fun.
Hayden and his Dad have been very busy working on the house in Millington. The progress being made is amazing and we can’t wait to use the house and the land to make some family memories. Once the house transformation is complete, Hayden will post pictures of before and after. The best pictures will be of our future cookouts, camp outs, and hunting endeavors.
We still have no name for Baby Girl Simons, but we’re getting close. Haley can’t wait to be a big sister and talks about all the ways she is going to help. The baby is moving around like crazy now and Hayden was able to feel a kick for the first time last night…she is getting strong! We are half way through and I am getting very attached and excited about having our third baby join our family.
Bring on Spring!
February 18, 2011 on 6:51 pm | In Haley, Hayden and Laura, Trey | No CommentsLife is good around the Simons house. Spring is in the air, which means longer days, warmer weather and a lot more time outdoors. Haley and Trey LOVE the outdoors. Haley’s got a big birthday coming up. 4 years old! Laura’s been planning like crazy to get ready for it. We’re going to go to a place that has horses and she’s going to have a Jessie Toy Story birthday party.
We were only able to invite a handful of people to that location so we’re going to have another small get together on March 6th – Haley’s real birthday. Yours truly did the invitations:
I know what you’re thinking. Wow, Hayden…you’re a whiz in photoshop. Yes. I know I am!
Haley’s really excited to finally be more than three and three quarters old.
Trey has been a handful and is getting to be more and more fun. He’s all over the place and tries to go outside every time the door opens. Cold weather hasn’t seemed to bother him. He just wants to go out.
We had a photo shoot the other night for Haley. She chose to dress up in her Pocahontas outfit. Haley wanted to dress Trey up a little so she put a bow in his hair. Poor guy, between Haley and the new girl that is on the way, he won’t stand a chance.
I don’t think I’ve posted any pictures of it yet, but when Trey is tired or sleeps, he sucks his middle two fingers instead of his thumb. It’s really pretty funny. Towards the end of the night, he was getting tired…so I got a few pictures of that too. Cute guy!
Laura’s doing well with the pregnancy. She’s finally over the nausea. From here on, it will just be a waiting game. We haven’t decide yet on “bud 3’s” name, but we’ve got one that we’re gravitating towards. Not sure if it is going to stick though. Only problem is, 2 of our friends have a daughter with the same name. Oh well.
Model in Training
January 20, 2011 on 11:22 pm | In Haley, Trey | No CommentsI think we’ve got a model in training. Laura teaches 8th grade girls Sunday School at 8:00 on Sunday mornings. The main service at Bellevue starts at 9:30. Which leaves me home alone to get the kids ready. It is a great reminder of what Laura does each morning the other 6 days of the week.
Getting the kids ready is no small task. I try to leave the house at 9. If I get them ready too early, I am almost assured of them getting food, marker or something on their clothes. So, I try to time it to where everyone’s ready right at 9. And that means that the vast majority of Sundays we’re ready right AFTER 9. Which puts us late.
This Sunday was different. I had them ready at quarter till. So now, what to do? I had to keep them busy. It dawned on me that I should take some pictures of our little man in his little man clothes. We didn’t have time to set up lights or do anything fancy, but I think he may have a modeling career. I got him to stand by the wall and un-prompted, he stuck one hand in his pocket. Funny stuff. We were running short on time, but I did manage to get a few pics with Haley in them.
Maybe next week we’ll get ready early again. And Haley can have her individual photo shoot.
By the way, I think Haley’s hair looks better down, but I deserve some props for getting that pony tail done. It took a SIGNIFICANT amount of effort on my part!
